Taupottreeman I can't agree more, this was a job I felt more experience was required and looked forward to picking up some tips, I have to admit I felt gutted after my colleague bigged him up to be so good, couldn't help thinking that with 4 years behind me I'll be just as good if not better (got to set your heights high :)) but at least I have the right to be up there!

Been reading the NPTC site and I haven't yet found anything to say its a legal requirement as such, seems to be a grey area.

"A certificate to demonstrate competence"

I will send sub-contractors back home on day one if they have no ticket. I also know people with tickets that have such bad habits I will not use them no matter how deperate. Joe public has asked for qualifications in the past occasionally but they could be fobbed off with any computer made stuff unfortunately. If you use un-qualified people you deserve to be dragged thro the mill and righty so in so many ways.

Sorry, sorry, sorry....NEBOSH H&S nurd here!

Either read the AFAG 805 'Training & Certifictaion', OR the ACOP (Approved Code of Practice, a quasi-legal document) to PUWER 98 and in particular Reg. 9 'Training' whihc states:

"Chainsaw operators

(Sect)191 All workers who use a chainsaw should be competent to do so. Before using a chainsaw to carry out work on or in a tree, a worker should have received appropriate training and obtained a relevant certificate of competence or national competence award, unless they are undergoing such training and are adequately supervised."

The ACOP if your inclined (and suffer from insomnia I'd recommend it!) see p.41...enjoy, ha!

The wording of sect 191 isn't very helpful really, should is not must.

Interesting comments - may I pose a question....

If you had a choice of someone to help you tomorrow between:

1) a climber with 5 years experience (but no tickets) who was recommended by a friend - or -

2) a climber just out of college with every ticket in the book?????

Which would you choose?

We had a super-qualified lad who we had to ask to leave within 1st week, no common sense and no sense of risk.
