I thought all climbing equipment only had a 5 year shelf life and cannot pass a loler test if older than that.

I'm guessing you occasionally check your tyres though, even though they passed the MOT.

 

LOLER is worth nothing without regular inspections between checks.

Yale hasn't used those snaps for at least 8-10 years that I can remember. I'm surprised the wirerope didn't give away due to simple metal fatigue already.

 

If you can read it, the sleeve on the end will have a date of manufacture on it.

 

Odd thing is, I've worn lots of those fliplines as much as that one is in a few months. I guess the lesson is that wear is only half the criteria for retirement.

No I'm not saying it's done that in 6 months, regular checks should of picked up on it though even if a LOLER inspector didn't.

 

What's your beef with LOLER?

yeah the strop is prob more than a few years old, it shouldnt of failed tho. anyway it passed its loler 6 months ago. it was a bit dirty but allweather climbing caused that. i aint a fair weather fairy:001_tt2: im still alive thats all that counts for you lot trying to turn it on me.

Im not sure that this is a personal thing at all Steve- merely alot / several concerned arborists who may well be wondering about the state of their own steel core flip lines, wanting as much clarification about one that has failed as possible, in order to make informed decisions about life saving equipment.
