Ivy on a house

Had a call today. A house covered in ivy and Virginia creeper. The client wants it removing from the roof down to the top of the ground floor windows. It's a lot of ivy and has been there a while obviously and is starting to encroach on the roof

 

My question is. What's the best way to take it off? It's an uneven driveway so Ladders would be difficult. Would scaffolding be a viable option? Is there a risk of damaging the brickwork?

Just use bits of wood or stones to the pack the bottom ladders.

:thumbup:big blowtorch, i'd use a old set of hedgetrimmers and either scaffold or mewp

from the pics it looks like a ladder job to me defo, failing that it would have to be a mewp and silky and loppers job.

When you start pulling the stems off work from the thick end and peel towards the tips; do it the other way round and you'll be there for a week breaking off 6" lengths. Pull down and out; the stems are brittle so will snap if you bend them to 90 degrees.

 

Sorted then; home for tea.

recently cleared a garage of ivy, luckily it all peeled off the roof in one big piece and didnt do no damage to the brickwork, if its a slate roof you may have the ivy growing under them
