Exactly what I'm thinking lee.

Trouble is growing things and grafting etc are totally alien and will be a whole new learning curve, unless of course we do as suggested and buy them as plugs and as they grow, so does your investment, its just time and space that is needed, I have plenty of space, it's the time that might be a problem

take cuttings off good specimen you work on so you know they will be worth it.

It's mental down here in Kent from about 2nd week in December.

£30-£40 for six-footers (unpotted).

Keep meaning to get my mate to fetch a load of tops down from Kielder when he comes down for the Christmas shoot, but we always get sidetracked...

Give it a go, you may find that you've got a natural aptitude for this work - I know I did! I just found horticulture to be a bit limiting, so went back to agriculture and tree work, but it does seem to be true - some people do have 'green fingers'.:001_smile:

Check out mycorrhizal fungi too. Maybe it was mentioned already. See the photo, for example, that I added to this page:

Redwood roots and mycorrhizae

All you need to do if find a local supplier. Not sure if the one outfit I listed on the page ships to the UK, but if he did, odds are it would be to a commericial business or nursery.

Dean, Planting and growing trees is so much more relaxing than cutting the things down. Doing stuff like that can seem like you have knocked your whole life down a gear. No noise, no useless staff and no customers asking stupid questions. Go for it. From what i've read on here you can turn your hand to most things so sure it would be successful.

I thought about growing containerised instant hedging, ie trimming containerised trees to hedge shape so you can suppy and plant an instant hedge. I'm sure theres money in that.

That's exactly what I thought and did!

Also worked out that if you put in a pot, put on the gound and surround by chippings the plant will root through the pot, anchor feed and water itself. Saves a lot of time and money.
