Our neighbour getting starlink next wk for internet and phoneline will see how they get on.

I am interested to see waht they think of it.

We are tied to sky as there is no fibre cable here which means we have to have a landline contract just to get broadband. I certainly dont need a landline so starlink does look promising.

I've recently considered Starlink really only because during recent power outages due to extreme weather bringing down power lines in the NW where we were off for several days there was also no phone due to the copper connection being removed.

So... I wonder after the worst storm that most can remember just how many folk were desperate for 21st century communications for one reason or another, and like me found themselves totally isolated from any help simply because the phone was also out.

This can only be by design.. Why on earth would you rip out a direct copper coms network replacing it with something that's completely un- understandable and which fails with the flick of switch ?

I previously was led to believe that cell towers had back up batteries and a generator to keep them charged, but if that's true they were turned off in November's storm.... I wonder how many died as a result of isolation and the inability to contact emergency services ?

Ah yes I should have mentioned: no mobile phone signal at all.  At least not enough to hold a conversation anyway.

We all use our mobiles off star link as no phone signal , most business seems to be over emails and mobiles , the only issue we had and we have three star link meshes over two houses is about 6 months ago we could not take calls off the mesh in our house off our mobiles  .. I can’t remember why .. maybe was an apple update that didn’t like star link but after a week it sorted itself out and has been fine since… speed wise it’s unreal you could have two tellies streaming and three phones at the same time and it doesn’t buffer.

We were told that they won’t replace copper lines at all , any new lines will be fibre and that won’t happen to where we live , too much to damage it if they did anyway.

Sounds like you are using those dodgy fire sticks matt 🤣 Most of the boys in work use them.

VOIP - I thought all phones were going that way now? Our phone is plugged into a wall socket rather than the router but is VOIP - you'd need to check of course, but it should be as simple as that.
