Training contracts - has anyone ever tried recouping costs from training a staff member that has left?

It is really difficult as employers . Lads go to some companies and harvest as many qualifications as the can then leave which is why often these companies are not great payers . I've been hit by this a few times but just take it on the chin . I even had a lad not comeback after training once . If I see someone who clearly wont be around for a long time I make sure they are compliant but no more .

I keep hold of training certificates that I have paid for they have no need to hold them

They earned the certification, it’s in their name, not yours, and they can just get a replace certificate.
This entire thread seems to say more about employers making bad choices with the employees they choose, rather than employees being chancers.

I understand where you are coming from, but it does go both ways...

If someone has paid for your ticket, you are, as far as I'm concerned, honour-bound to stick around until you've made at least that cost back for whoever paid the bill... and there are people out there who will play the game and collect whatever they can before they F off.

People just need to have the discussion beforehand, understand what each party expects from the other, and get it all in writing.

They will or they won’t, honour rarely comes into it.
They’ll fabricate some dispute so they can walk out rather than have the guts to tell the truth.

Having said that, there’s a difference between putting a bloke through a simple chainsaw certification and putting him on a 10 weeker.

Paying for a couple of days training doesn’t cost the earth.
The employee may leave after being reliable and turning up on time, then just doesn’t fancy Arb anymore, or is fed up of your dull stories and shit jokes.
Paying for a 10-12 week course is a large investment, and if you throw that kind of money about on an employee you aren’t sure is committed, then your the mug, not them.
