Had to do the same with the last of my Border Terriers a couple of months back, he was two days short of 15 years, the hardest choice but you owe it to them to do the right thing. 
The house still seems pretty empty, even with the kids, so we are picking up this little rascal from a rescue centre in a couple of weeks. 
I’ll introduce her to the pack in due course.
