When you look on gov website it talks about rules before Apr 2025 and purchase before and after...

If purchased before you can run on old rules till you sell, lease is up or Apr 2029...

Old rules are.... a dc pickup with a payload of 1000kg is a van.... below this is a car.... if you put a canopy on weather metal, fibreglass etc these are classed as approx 45kg and drops your payload below the 1000kg thus becomes a car....

So possible ok till 2029 but no canopy on the rear.

Well hopefully Labour won’t last that long. It’s nothing more than hitting an easy target. I’ve a3.2 Ranger that’s used 90% of the time for work, they know fine well it’s a good earner for the treasury with not a lot of kickback from the main labour core of voters. To be honest mines is a68 plate running over 100k, I was toying with the idea of replacing it but probably just won’t bother now. This is the change and growing of the economy we were told about.

If correct (?) these rules don't stop a sole trader from putting down running costs of the vehicle ( % use for business). Rather it's now classing them as cars in terms of taxation for companies putting them in company car tax bracket ( for employees and directors) which I don't no f all about. So if you're a sole trader you can carry on as before but if you buy one for business it can't be a capital allowance - or rather only a small % of purchase cost  ??

Exactly... my accountant always deducts 10% of all motor expenses to go down as personal

Private use is an odd subject... if  I stop on the way home at tesco, grab some food and or just grub, or just  fuel, that ain't in the scope!

Techincally that is called 'incidental use' . So if you were working and stopped for a sandwich it is incidental. If it's your day off and you take a work vehicle to Asda for your weeks shopping it is private use.

Spoke to my accountant today and he said that as a sole trader the company car thing doesn't apply....

Going forwards if I swap my 4x4 dc pickup in for another, I cannot reclaim the vat nor 100% of the purchase only a measly 6% or so.... (after april)

So it would seem if you wanted to change you need to do before April so can allow the 100% through your books. After April they're not worth diddly.... and not something you would buy again.

If you don't change your motor you can continue as you are especially if you have already reclaimed the vat and allowed all your capital allowances against it....
