This article states government won't introduce pay per mile.

However if they do I would guess it would be on top of flat rate.

I suspect many of us have spare vehicles that do a low annual mileage where solely an annual mileage would otherwise be cheaper.

Also would this tinpot commie govt. have the organisational skills to get the civil service to devise a system and implement it rapidly.

No doubt we will get absolutely f##cked on vehicle duty.

They want us on bicycles like their red book poster boys, then they'll tax those because we might venture outside of our city/town/village/street and then finally front door without papers.

Not sure where I stand on this but there is a drop in revenue for them from petrol tax which they need to get back. A massive change to how we pay taxes if there was though. Taxes are inevitable just how they are collected changes. Sure there will be some whinging from those living in mansions in the sticks but if done fairly the tax we pay should be similar however they do it

Seem its being introduced  already for trucks in  various countries etc and in NZ for cars.

I do around 20000 a year the mrs does around 8000 we live in a  rural location, not a bloody mansion as some fool has just suggested. Recently I’ve been up and down between Aberdeenshire and Northumberland a lot plus working in the south east. The suggested 15p I’ve seen would be 8 times the amount we pay on road tax. It’s I ludicrous idea that will hammer so many people. Pure Labour control. Monitoring you constantly. 
No doubt the normal ATL disciples will think it’s ****************ing wonderful.

my immediate thought is that if they raise tax on petrol to tax high-mileage motorists, what about the petrol we buy for our machines?

Which to be honest, at the worst case estimation 15p / mile and take off the approximated 6p / mile petrol duty, 20,000 miles would give an extra bill of about £200... In the grand scheme of things, not a lot. Zero rate the car tax and that drops to maybe £100? Drive only a few hundred miles  year and you'll be better off

 

That 15p is the worst case, there are a whole range of costs quoted from 1p up to 15p

But noting here it is hypothetic - no plans to do this and the last government toyed with the idea and that is why the numbers are readily available - the research was done months and years ago
