It was originally listed as an ms240 spares/repairs which I was going to fix and sell but I think I'm gonna have to return this, definitely a head scratcher!! Thank you for the info on that type of fuel cap being pre 2000 and other details, fingers crossed I recoup what I spent on parts

The fuel cap and oil cap being screw in instead of flip top means it pre dates the ms240 and ms260 models, so is either an 024 or 026.

The fact it has a decompressor fitted means it could well be an 026 as the 024 never had a decompressor fitted. Although it could have had an 026 cylinder fitted.

Seems an awful lot of work though to change cylinders etc just to be sold as spares or repair.

The chain cover is a chinese copy. Although it is a later 024 having the two bar studs...early models had one on the 024 and a red choke lever instead of black on the later models.

Before you return it, it comes down to how much you paid and whether you think the seller has been genuinely dishonest. Most of joe public wouldnt even read the model number of the chainbrake sticker and would simply describe it as the model on the most obvious place seen which is the recoil cover, although its not an ms240 either way.

If you paid £100 then there £100 worth of spares on it

The serial number says its an 024 production date 10/1987

..although the two extra vertical cooling fins on the head suggest an 026. The 024 didn't have those....but it could be an 026 cylinder fitted to an 024 crankcase...the first pics with the covers on show a decomp valve, but isn't there in the pics with the top cover removed??

Who to ? 😆 It looks like a parts bin special that someone else had the same idea about selling. Make it look like a chainsaw and someone will buy it. It looks like it started out as an 026 then started evolving. If you bought it as spares repairs you can't complain, you got what it is described as. Have you tried to repair it yet ?
