Hi all,

I've recently purchased a cheap old saw to use around my newly acquired bit of land cutting a little bit of firewood and a few old sleepers to landscape some steps. I'm a bit new to larger saws having had up to now a little black and decker thing that's as old as time itself.

I've a few questions.

Firstly the knife is quite big (a couple of feet) and probably a bit large for what I want to do, I assume I can change it for a smaller one?

Will cutting sleepers damage the chain at all?

The saw has a weird primer thing on the handle, apparently it's for oiling the chain like on the black and decker? But another friend has advised me that petrol saws oil automatically?

It seems to run well enough for a cheap buy. It's a red thing.

Thanks

Not sure if this will load right? It's a fair old thing but comes very comfortably to hand. I was looking at some Stihl battery saws but they seemed very expensive for what they are and I quite fancied buying a petrol saw rather than having to stop charging batteries.

Thing circled in red is the primer thing?

Also I assume the 40:1 on the fuel cap is the ratio to put oil in the petrol? My strimmer is on 50:1, will this be ok or should I have a separate mix?

118cc around 12hp . Big tourquey saw . I think the " primer " you refer to is an additional oiler to the auto oiler . Useful with long bars especially if milling . Good find .

You've just entered "hallowed saw" ownership if this is for real. You don't just buy an old saw for cutting sleepers and end up with a 166!

Stihl 090

Dolmar 166

McCulloch SP125

Echo 1201

The gods of saws. For ever and ever Amen.
