Big ol' Pine tree leaning about 45 degree angle

The wind blew over a big old pine tree I had. If I could stand it back up I would because it isn't dead. Anyway, it is leaning on a tree I want to keep.
I was doing some research on how to take this tree down and it was saying to cut a notch in the top and then cut a line from underneath. 
Does that match your experience? 


It is about 15" diameter, if I were to guess. 

Eventually I'll burn it in my log burner

That's one possible way of seperating the trunk from rootplate but there's likely to be a lot more involved to 'get it down' than one cut, and an awful lot to go wrong in the process.

 

Have you got photos of the tree, and what equipment/experience do you have?

If you stood it back up it would fail again anyway because the rootplate is obviously compromised.

While not a particularly large tree, it sounds like this is beyond your experience and abilities. I’d suggest ringing someone who knows what they’re doing rather than making the situation worse or getting yourself hurt.

Tie a rope to it and pull it over with a tractor. Or something else with alot of pull .

I think a lot depends on how much it is leaning, the size and space around it what the best options would be - as above - a picture would help

I was just reminded of the visitor to arbtalk that thought the price he was given to remove a large hairy softwood was too much. Plucky chap was going to do it himself with a handsaw, motorcycle suit/helmet and some ladders that reached nearly halfway up the tree. That was a while ago, think he's still taking brash to the tip in his boot at weekends.
