Hi All

I have a job coming up for a multi stem willow that needs re pollarding (i didn't do the previous pollard). All 4 of the limbs have aprox 45° lean with minimal leaders on to climb up to anchor in  the growth at the top anchor points are not very large to anchor in either.

How would you guys approach this job  i dont have access to a mewp either.

All hrlp is appreciated

Thanks in advance

Could you use 2 anchor points to tie into 2 of the best/highest limbs? Or create a floating anchor point between 2 points that will hold you near to where you need to be?
Hard to tell without seeing the tree though I appreciate

When you say you don’t have access to a mewp do you mean the trees aren’t accessible by a mewp? If not there are no shortage of places to hire a mewp from of theres access.

I’ve done stacks of trees like this in the past, way back before mewps because as accessible as they are today. Sometimes there’s no other way than nipping up the button cheeks and cracking on.

pics would help though for sure

Anchoring to regrowth is one case I think two tie in points can make sense, especially if one is lower down as a backup. I've also become a fan of the SRT redirect as you can put a sling and biner round those stems high up, multisaver also works for that DRT.

Or final thought, depending on how much you are taking off and what the bark is like on the old stems, sometimes the special pruning spikes can be used to good effect.

I've long thought an artificial central leader would be useful for spready/weak trees. Like a lighting tower boom, bit of stage truss or just ladders. Strap it to the trunk and maypole around it doing the outlying branches.
