Tacho would only apply if over 3.5t gross weight vehicle, or if over 4250kg with trailer and not covered under an exemption. For example, the village baker's 3.5t delivery van doesn't need a tacho.

And it's 'hire or reward'....

Baker is exempt as is delivering a 'craft' product and under a max permissable mass of 7.5 tonnes according to the regs. Section 1.1 linked here:

Def worth knowing what our particular set ups are and how we sit within these regs re tacho requirements.

Interesting. The regs are deffo worth reading through.

I think I was confusing the small trailer exemption for licensing pre-boris trailer giveaway.

Most on here will run under the 100km from base, tools and equipment for use by driver in course of his work exemption.

Edit- sadly I don’t think this hypothetical baker would be exempt. Especially as driving the van to make his deliveries would be his main/only job for the day.

Luckily bread is light!

If I get stopped and asked where my tachograph is I just say the gypsies stole it, then no further action is ever taken.

On Arbtalk FB, the Gypsy Tree King (Shane Smith) was quite insistent that his subjects don't steal and that he has helped return many a stolen chipper to it's owner which rather conradicts his claim that gypsies don't steal...

Securing the load does make sense, as people get killed by stuff falling off, witness that girl whose car was crushed by a large log coming off a lorry a few years ago.

I once was going up the centre lane of the M11 and noticed cars ahead were swerving to one side and the other.  When my turn came, there was a filing cabinet standing right way up in the middle of the road.  A few miles further on we passed an artic bulker full of scrap metal, bits of the load sticking out of the top, no net. It was funny enough, but not so funny if a lump like that lands on a Nissan Micra.
