A complete and utter tragedy for sure.

Seems a bit weird that someone sprayed up the felling cuts though. Unless that was forensics sort of outlining the death scene.

Don't start, get the AA involved and we'll all have to buy another climbing line again.

Where is the sawdust?

Come on Rich, you know as well as anyone it's in his pockets, pants, boots, wallet, truck and kitchen. Probably one tiny bit in his left eye too.

A stupid reckless thing to do- however it was a significant tree/landmark because the uplands of Northern England are overgrazed and largely barren regarding tree cover. That's the real tragedy.

If it was the 16 yr old he was pretty proficient and probably just wanting to further hone his skills. More likely someone else or motive involved.

Almost as if there was someone else up there with him (allegedly of course) showing him what to do.

Just a thought, it is quite a bare part of the country, not a lot of people living there, though I can't say for sure and without knowing exactly but I'd be putting a bet on that the lads family farm the land, of close to this spot and have finally been inconvenienced by walkers walking to see this tree for the last time. Just a suspicion. Would also put a bet on his dad driving him up there on a quad bike, mid week when it is quiet for walkers, bad weather coming, and all that

Reminds me of the Golden Spruce that was felled by Grant Hadwin in Canada.

he felled that one to protest at the disgust of logging industry.

he was apperently bi polar.

don’t think the 16 yo would have similar motives though.

I suspect there's more to this, I'm sure will come to light

Something like the eco zealots trying to prove a point ;

'well you're up in arms about this one tree , yet you don't mind hundreds be felled for hs2'
