Tree of Heaven.

Looked at a job at the weekend one part of the job is removing a tree of heaven. So what is the best way of killing root and suckers which are every where in the garden.

Tree of heaven or staghorn sumac?

Only ever dealt with the latter- lots of grubbing out with a mattock and ecoplugs in main stump. Repeat as necessary

I don't know, but did drive past one I took down a couple of years ago and it's a ruddy great bush now. I would think cut in and stump killer, maybe ecoplugs? I think they seed prolifically as well as sucker so some of the plants around will be new seedlings.

They do sucker prolifically - as a previous TO we would drill and apply herbicide in the growing season and wait until we saw some decline then fell and drill / apply herbicide to the stump (not grind)...and then treat suckers with herbicide as necessary (and 'hope for the best' tbh - probably 2nd only to White Poplar for suckering.)

As above I've not found anything that will survive a few rounds of max strength glyphosate.  Even then my repeat applications could just be because of impatience to see results, missing some plants originally, rain etc.  Leave the stump and stems quite long and use a dye with the glyphosate so you know which suckers have been treated.

Took a decent sized one down the other day. Just bored into the edges and put poison in as usual.

I normally cover the stump with some plastic to prevent run off if it rains.

We used to make the last cut 1" thick, run round the cambium with a groove, pack it with ammonium sulfamate and then nail the cover piece back on, it looks a bit more natural.

 

Mind I agree with Paul, ecoplugs about now prior to felling and leaf fall may be more effective, much as I dislike them.

I ve done similar with willow, but used glyphosate. Sounds like nothing different just cut and treat.
