That's what the guide said, that particular machine never 'worked' underground, it came from a training place for display.

My family cut pit props in their mill back in the day, thousands of lorry loads through the 50's upto mid 70's but the Elm ran out and more steel shoring was used. The asked us to start cutting again before the strike but the timber was too expensive, transport too dear and labour costs had risen but their rates had barely moved. Half of the Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire pits were propped up with Barrowcliff props!

Morning all.

Good day yesterday at the mining museum, tour given by a 3rd generation miner that worked there most of his days. A wealth of knowledge that made for an interesting afternoon.

Not so sure about the hedgecutter in the car park though.

They left most of the engineering kit in the pits I was told, too expensive to get it out for scrap!

25 years ago I was trying to get to grips with new fangled common knowledge crane controls on a forwarder working a clear fell for open cast working of old mines. My mentor said he watched as the top layers of soil were carefully removed and as they got to old galleries the surface opened up like a zip to reveal trains of old coal wagons still sitting on tracks.

Got a grinding job next two days, 7 big Douglas stumps, lots to take away.

Got lucky and found four new Rayco super teeth yesterday (the straight ones that take the brunt of the punishment)

At least it’s dry for the foreseeable.
