How much does it cost to service your truck?

I've recently bought my first truck for work and need to get it serviced. Local garages didn't want to take it on which I know would have been cheaper than the official  dealer service, so I called them for a quote because I can't find someone to do it.

The dealer charges for a minor service (oil change, oil filter, brake & clutch fluid, fuel filter) £579

A major service (minor service stuff plus air cleaning filter, grease hub bearings & hub cap both axles) £626

Included in all these quotes are complementary washing, hoovering, and RAC breakdown cover which I can't deduct from the cost of the quote, so literally these are the prices I seem to be looking at.

How much do you all pay for servicing your trucks and do you go to local garages or dealers? Price is mad for what it is

Hi,

Interim service at local garage on 14 plate transit, oil and filter changes. About £375+vat. Done as part of mot etc.

What vehicle and year is it you have? This might help others find similar vehicle costs.

Unless you're going to do all your own work, you need to find a good local independent garage, and build up a good relationship with them.

The place I use I've been going to since I started driving, and my dad has been going to since I was a kid. Our family has probably bought their house!!

I do some work myself, depends what the problem is, how busy I am, how busy the garage is etc!

Never have a clue what anything costs, they do the work that is needed, and I get a bill in the post a month later. I trust them, they trust me

Oh once or twice over the years I've had to put a van into fords to get it plugged in for software update. You tell them that is the only job you want done.

When you pick it up they have gone over the entire vehicle, picking fault in everything that is slightly worn, and hand you an estimate for £1k for a load of work that doesn't need done

+ one for your local garage . It is recognized now that a non main dealer can do your service and stamp the book . My local garage has all the " trickery " , code readers , DPF re generators and whatever else  and they are half the price of the Nissan main dealers and do just as good a job .

Being on good terms with an independent is the best way I'd say too.  I've been with my guy for about 10 years now.  To give you an idea of the relationship he recently messaged me to apologise for a slight delay in my Navara service and included pics of his newborn to explain that delay!

I trust him implicitly; no way would he cut corners or use crap parts so I'm happy.

So @Cordata to answer your question - find a good independent garage or mechanic.  To do that ask around; word of mouth finds the best people

That local garage called me when the missus had her car in there for a new bumper and air con radiator (I flat out won’t do fiddly shit like that plus don’t have regas gear) and told me the water pump had gone and it wouldn’t bleed. VW only part, £300 plus vat.

I told them that doesn’t happen, bleed the fkin thing properly. Called me back ten minutes later, surprisingly it had bled ok.

I want to like them and use them, but since that I’m wary.

OP- I service all my own trucks, usually costs around £30 for oil and filter. It’s really not hard.

When doing arb stuff, you very likely will have more filters and oils to change than just a truck offers. So at least fuel, oil and air filtration should be on your agenda.

I'm doing this since 2 decades and never heard a quote for basic stuff since then. To be honest, I'm shocked about these prices. The world went crazy meanwhile.

The main reason I started doing it my own was the hassle around it, not the money which was reasonable at this time, like 40 for an oil service.

I hated making an appointment which fits both partys, bringing the car to them, asking someone to pick me up and bring me home, having that vehicle not for one or two days and finally finding someone, who was able to bring me back to the garage during their opening hours. In the end, 2 hours where gone easily, no car, someone you due a beer for driving (ok, beer with friends is good) and yes, for that trouble you have to pay in addition.

Even if they sometimes had a spare car for me, I couldn't use it like my own fully equipped vehicle, or it just was not able to tow. Hassle.

So make up your workshop, visit youtube and save all the trouble. 🍻

Not for LR products engines prone to snap cranks within warranty apparently.
