Plenty of other trades get worn out , I know plumbers with shagged knees from crawling on floors etc , scaffolders with joint problems , plasterers with bad necks , lorry drivers ..obese 😃, office workers with stress etc ...nearly all jobs can take there toll , we were not really designed for repetitive actions for 40 plus years in the same job!!   I hear plenty of talk about other trades doing well but I know of plenty who still live in modest houses , drive an old van and do not  seem to be on holiday regularly or indulge in fine dining , most trades just make a reasonable living like most of us do ....Also it is a competitive world out there and most work seems to end up being the "going rate " for the job , no one is regularly winning contracts if they are well above the going rate .

Here in France, a great deal of the arguement over keeping the retirement age of certain jobs low is because of the physical nature of the work.

Back in the day, steam engine drivers won a retirement age of 52 which is still retained despite the relative ease and comfort of a modern train.

For my part, I feel an encroaching cold dull ache in my hands and a global stiffness especially after working in the cold and wet.

I honestly cannot see me doing this work much past 60

Start bare minimum you need to justify work and equipment, as busier you become as bigger prices you try to charge, when you reach max possible, you start loosing jobs, it's time to drop price a bit, and so on, I call it wave economy, first thing you learn in economy course's. I don't reccomend get paid per day, price a vole job, yes u will make some mistakes( after 25 years I do mistakes too its fine, be philosophical) but overall income will increase compared to day charges. That my advice, I give it to few of my friends in other trades, its working.

You should steer clear of vole jobs, unless you’re a pest controller.
