My parents are victims of cowboy tree surgeons who are now blaming my mother.

You are casually stating with certainty, something which solicitors, barristers, and "expert witnesses" could line their pockets squabbling over for a few years, should the neighbours be vindictive enough and well-heeled enough (or stupid enough!) to decide to pursue.

The growth next door hasn't come from setting seed, it has come directly from the roots of the original tree which has spread over the boundary, and I reckon that is sufficient grounds to make the problem contestable.

Awkward or not, the neighbours need to be included in dealing with the problem.

An, "it's not our problem any more, you deal with it" approach could end up badly, and in my opinion, it's probably worth a bit of teeth gritting to avoid that possibility.

In the original post, it was stated that it was a wild cherry (I’m guessing, it just ‘grew’, rather than being lovingly planted).

Not impossible to imagine that this was just a sucker from the wide ranging root of an even older original tree growing in next doors garden.

I reckon this thing is centuries old.  No one owns it. It is feral.

My head was trying to advise, but in my heart, really, I'm rooting for the tree.

If you excuse the pun!
