I would like yo build my own but I am not that woodwork savvy...yet! Although I did make a bench two years ago and it is still standing and 6 months ago a log storage 😃

Ours are in an old shed, I made a bit of a nest box inside. Honestly they aren't fussy about your woodwork skills so just crack on and have a go, you'll get better with practice - it's about being self sufficient after all.

 

The roosting rails in mine are stood on metal bars, when there's a touch of mite I just chuck them and cut a couple of fresh ones rather than trying to clean the wood.

.. and second as said above, keep your ear out on local ads / village FB etc. We've got quite a few hens that way and I've also helped move chicken runs which people had got and didn't want any more.

Yeah I hear that. I am seeing it more for a pet, kid learning about animal(s), chicken welfare, something to do and fresh eggs.

I was going to warn that although hens can be lovely to look at and have scratching around the place they are also mini-dinosaurs and will happily rip apart all sorts of garden wildlife, snakes, lizards, whole nests of voles etc.

Have you thought about bees? After paying out a couple of grand you can spend your spare time getting stung and in the summer months chasing swarms of bees about the countryside. Very relaxing.

@Paul in the woods  ha, no to bees! I'm a research nut u like to feel I'm ready for hens... but the garden will suffer..I have a sectioned off bit. Will zee.
