I got some peat free germination soil which I put in the grow backs. I'll put some in the plastic ones now as I had run out. I used manure and compost. For the grow bags I used peat free germination compost and manure. Then topped up with "normal" compost. All of my own compost has gone into raised veg patches

@Paul in the woods Makes sense as where I live is known as little Italy 🤣 I have been earth up as the leaves grow but the ones in the 40L have not leaves. Will see

@Paul in the woods Bindweed is a pain, I decided to nuke mine I kept digging it out then covered the areas for a whole year then planted the next year all fine then this year its gone nuts again. I got a poop load of this stuff as well ..I dug six shovels down and the roots are still going, this and bind weed has gone nuts

I have lost of patatoes growing at the moment. Some in grow bags (doing amazing) but the ones I have growing in those plastic 40L tubs from wickes are not growing at all. I have put holes in the tubs for drainage. The seed patatoes all came from the same pack.

Totally agree with the finance stuff. We all now the other pros and cons so I won't list them. And I wish my (old) allotment was full of hippies 😆😆 i had mainly old miserable farts

I agree, back in the day that is how it was but I am talking way before any of us was born. Maybe pockets of it around and or when we was all young. The way forward is to grow your own. It may mean eat whats in session. Also be wary of allotments, although i liked mine it get all very childish and political. Mainly old farts nothing better to do. The other side I had a few helpful people and then a few Eastern europens got some allotments they work gard and make good allotments but they gave everyone attitude. Not saying all allotments are like this just my exp and a few people I have spoke to. Guess it's no different from anywhere egos etc. (My allotments have cultures from all over..just in case the Woke patrol are on here) everyone was being a d*ck besides a few Own land, own rules grow what you want how you want.

Hello, I am back on the office today so late replies. It is a dalek bin, not the best ones as you need to turn the compost, but it is a 70quid one so I didn't say no. And it is better than nothing. However I am purchasing one that turns in the near future. You are right about the green bins, I try to keep as much as possible. At the moment I tend to have more weeds goutch (however you spell it) so they go in the green bin... I am waiting for a week of nice weather so I can blitz the garden again.

@Paul in the woods ha, no to bees! I'm a research nut u like to feel I'm ready for hens... but the garden will suffer..I have a sectioned off bit. Will zee. fyi I gave pet rats... I did have 32, I am down to 5 now. Lol

Yeah I hear that. I am seeing it more for a pet, kid learning about animal(s), chicken welfare, something to do and fresh eggs. Goats and cows next.....🤣🤣🤣 Jokes

They seem nice and at least I can pay on credit and not shell put too much in one hit. 🙂 I guess wood is better/traditional however red mites and cleaning would be more of a pain I have read when it comes to wood. I would like yo build my own but I am not that woodwork savvy...yet! Although I did make a bench two years ago and it is still standing and 6 months ago a log storage 😃

I hear that, I am leaning more towards how chickens are farmed, which is not nice. Coops are way expensive, I would get a wooden one but cleaning that out seems like a right pain. I am very security conscious so I should be OK protecting them from foxes but I am prepared that a fox will get to them or one, one day. I shall check out the link.. as an omlett for 409 to 600 quid is not cheap!

DThanks for the replies so far. @trigger_andy you seem to have it all sorted, I have a 5kw stove one day I would like a bigger place, arga, stoves land etc. Few of my great uncles live like that 😀 chilled and lived within their means. I am thinking of getting the Omlet run and coop? @Paul in the woods I guess im looking to be more self sufficient with a bit of relax away from work but also grow my own food over time. Chickens are my next step, expensive to set up but fresh eggs see good and also with little one growing up he can learn about chickens etc in stead of sitting in front of an xbox all the time. @Gimlet who wouldnt !

I have always liked the idea of living of the grid, that or on a barge. (Missus doesn't) In short looking at a computer all day and tapping away at code is nice but I need somthing different on the side. So living of the "grid..ish." I don't mean in a hippy sense but in the, my own yard sense (I did try an allotment, but my one is full of old political farts) anyway, Anyone else live off the grid..ish ? Currently I have gallup my whole garden as it was full of weeds (very hippy of me) I have veg patches Soon to have some chickens (still debating that one) Looking to do some woodcraft courses and go camping more. If this is not the right topic for the website, let me know before banning me 😁

Nice, thanks for the advice and reply, I will have to blow the dust off of my running shoes. Neighbour has a chainsaw, I wouldn't dare buy or use one but I'm sure for a few quid he would do some cutting. I shall keep my eyes and ears open at 8am. Thanks again

Delivery is best , i am home most days. 2 Happy to collect locally, if lots of wood I would have to rent a van which means a few days notice I am based in hoddesdon. Thanks Adam

I recently brought a battery one. It works well, buy you can't go wrong with a petrol one. I stay away from electric as I can't stand cables! I would go for a decent battery or petrol
