Lancaster Bomber

I also love the Lancaster - amazing aircraft.  So sad that it was a weapon of what would now be called extensive war crimes.  Can you imagine a thousand of them heading towards a single city on a single night each carrying around 5 tons of bombs?

It’s been a while since I saw the stats, but from memory Allied forces dropped over 10x as much weight of bombs on Germany as Axis forces did on the U.K.

I’m not excusing either, but stating this for context on the scale of destruction.

Incidentally, it is 79 years today since 617 Sqn took off on the Dambusters raids on the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams.

And of course my city (Newport), Cardiff, Swansea, Newcastle, Bristol and a few others.  Still about a tenth of the German cities we attacked.  Nearly as many Germans killed in Hamburg in one week as in the entire duration of the Blitz on UK cities.

We must never forget the Blitz, but all too often we forget the other side of the coin.  And we deliberately targeted civilians.

It was unbelievably loud when it roared over me, it was very low though. Got to agree it was very impressive

They were very quiet and graceful on cruise power, but like most engines that all changed when you opened her up!
