Tribute to the old Defender 90?

40k is cheaper than all the higher end models of the regular pickups over here!
 

A mate has a high spec new 110, he loves it, reckons it handles far better than the discovery’s he’s had before.

Look great I reckon, as with any new vehicle it’ll be packed with electronics, but that’s unavoidable now, I’d rather have that than a new jap truck tbh, shame the basic models aren’t available here.

I think it looks aweful.

 

Might fit the bill for the "Green Wellies & Tweed Brigade", but Land Rover has had its day as a viable off road vehicle.

If you mean viable off road vehicle as something around 20k that comes in overalls so you can dog it to death for 3 years and take it back under warranty for any squeak, then the good times have gone.

 

Why waste a build slot in that market when you can sell absolutely everything you can build for nearly three times the price, into a market where bumping up a kerb is considered off road.

 

However don’t let the fact it’s looks aren’t to everyone’s taste or it’s price tag is high detract from the fact they’re incredibly capable on or off road.

Exactly but there must remain an opening for a basic utility vehicle without all the frills but with ABS, airbags,collision avoidance and other safety items.

Yes I agree, but because they’re going to get hammered and people will still want full warranty on them for a reasonable duration, then they too will have to come with a cost premium.

Owned a 110 since last summer .

Love it, goes like stink and you can happily sit on the motorway for hours on end even with elbows 🙃

Anyone who says their no good off-road has clearly never driven one off-road...certainly more capable than a stock pickup...I'd argue that it's the most capable stock off-road vehicle on the market atm.

As Eddie says the old defender was never going to get re incarnated as its former self, as one landrover employee said to me once .."why sell a handful of 30k defenders when you can sell 70k vehicles all day long"

Like it or loathe it landrover have nailed the SUV market...cannot produce enough.

Discussing it a while back with local off-road specialists...as he pointed out all the Landrover fans were up in arms when the new one came out ...most have never bought a new landrover ever...what did they expect? 

 

But ....if the Grenadier is anything like it claims that is going to cause some fun...everything on paper looks perfect ...£48k starting maybe not so but hey I can't see decent pickups been less than 50k at the rate prices are going 😳😳😳😳🤦‍♂️

Yes the world has changed, I picked up a new £1400 series 3 station wagon in 73 for the farm, I was given it in 80 and ran it till about 90 when it was given to an my employee at the time for offroading. It was slow, uncomfortable and thirsty and I wouldn't want it again, the 110 was a massive leap forward and I'd happily have that now over a Hilux or ranger but it was still uncomfortable.

I switched out to a MK7 Transit 4x4 and apart from towing capacity (not actual ability) wish I’d have gone that way a Defender or so ago.

However it’s had more niggles than I ever imagined, and some stupid money thrown at it a few times unexpectedly.

Nothing is perfect and looking at fuel costs a nice 600cc Trail bike is looking ever more attractive for nipping out and pricing type stuff.

How far could you drive yours with water over the top of the bonnet?

 

Would you leave it stuck in a river overnight with the current flowing through it. Winch it out the next day and drive it home?

 

Tip it on its side, pitch the tent, sort it out in the morning kind of thing.

 

Sorry its a poser truck imho.If it makes you happy thats excellent,if it suits your boots even better. 

 

Your getting less load space than a 4x4 volvo estate and probably less reliability.
