Helpful Advice Please from SRT Climbers...

Having only ever climber on DRT, I have had my first attempt at trying to climb on SRT.. I thought it would be beneficial in aiding me in getting into the canopy...

But it didn't seem any easier than DRT, in fact, it seemed far harder.. (Watching Youtube videos people make it look so easy)...

- I am climbing using the following kit: Petzl Sequoia SRT Tree Care Harness, Petzl ZigZag & Chicane, SRT Chest Harness & Clip, CT Foot Ascender, and a Systeme 3A Knee Ascender, on Teufelberger Tachyon 11.5 45m Rope..

So what am I doing wrong?

- I seem to be spinning around on the rope more than Kylie Manogue on stage......

- The ZigZag & Chichane can't go any lower on my bridge (I have the shortest bridge available) and it seems to leave me with very little hand space above for trying to stay hold myself vertical. which then means that my feet want to raise up.

So what advice would you give me to try and improve my technique?

Go out with someone who climbs srt to show you the best ways to access the canopy and work the crown

Stick with it, and make sure the particular tree lends itself to srt. There are plenty of trees that are just plain easier in ddrt.

 

Big spready prunes are probably the most obvious srt trees. You have to plan differently and look for the redirect opportunities to keep your rope above you. The downside is you then have to go back up through those redirects.

Actually, what he said. You'll learn more in an afternoon climbing with an experienced bloke than you will on here with the best will in the world

As a self taught srt climber I found it hard to transition from drt at first but persisted with it and eventually found it easy. There are more options and less effort to move around the Crown. When you first start you will find you only learn once you are thinking about it after the climb.
Try and use only a chest ascender and foot Ascender to access the crown and try to isolate the best anchor point to access the crown initially. It’s more about balance and Tending slack than holding your weight on drt.

It’s worth pursuing as it will prolong your climbing career and improve it

Thanks and I agree… But I don’t know anyone in Mid Wales that climbs SRT

For free hanging ascent, get your body in and focus on driving straight upwards. Thrashing about wastes energy.

Redirects don't have to be down through crotches. A sling and biner can save a lot of grovelling.

Persist.

Try and stay as upright as possible and keep you feet under your arse.

 

Imagine pedalling a bike backwards.  That should keep it efficient with the foot and knee ascender and it helps to keep the force downward and you ascending upward.

All good advice so far.

All I can offer is don’t do what I used to and try and take big steps to ascend.

It sounds counterintuitive but taking little steps will get you up the tree quicker.
