I did some Pop a few years ago. It was ok, most of the slabs stayed straight. Very wet from memory. 
Dried almost white. No real figure or outstanding grain to speak of until you stain it.  
Nice and lightweight when dry.

 

Would I mill it again? Yes. Straightforward and easy.

I think of poplar as being like the hardwood equivalent of spruce. It's about the same hardness, the same lack of figure but nice and stable so good for carcassing, work benches and things which will be painted. It isn't very durable but it absorbs preservatives or stains extremely well.

Lorries also use it because it doesn't form sharp splinters.
