Sprocket wear

Just a quickie I hope: is this sprocket ...

 

A) Totally knackered

B) About to turn

C) Got at least another chain in it 

D) Barely run in?

They're like 8 quid. If in doubt buy a new one. I keep a couple spares in my saw toolbox.

If it is off, change it. You may be able to squeeze another chain on it but why do that if the thing is off and worn!

Fvvked. Buy three then yr never short. ( will go look at my new Husqvy as didnt notice wot sprocket system on it  😑)  K

What you should not do is put a brand new chain with it, will not run together well.

Ideally you alternate between two chains so they all wear similarly and then when the two chains are dead you change the sprocket too. That's what it says in the book anyway.

So I have a part worn chain on it, probably a third of the way through its life so do I swap the sprocket with a new one (with the part-worn chain) or wait for the death of the chain and swap both. It's a 25" chain so not keen just to toss it.

I would just use the rim at least until the chain is finished.

 

Rim £8 probably last for 3 chains or more

 

25" chain £25

 

25" bar £65 should last for 10 chains in forestry probably a good deal less ringing up firewood.

 

Production tree felling gets through comparatively more chains than arb work because felling close to the ground is affected by soil contamination of the bark, worse on sand and negligibly on clay.
