Being more useful

Get useful with a throwline. If you can get a line set in the next tree for a climber, or fish out hangers with the throwline to save them a bit of climbing, you'll soon become the guy they want on each job with them.

I would rate this as being of lower importance myself. Most customers will know and Oak as an Oak, not Quercus Robur etc. I am not saying there is anything wrong with knowing the Latin names, just that there are far more useful things.

Is there any way to combine this with my new love of raking?

Was more thinking going forward for things like working to tree plans / reports etc. But agree definitely more useful things to learn to be useful on site.

I'm not in the industry, but I did have some climbing tuition from a member here who will remain nameless because he was rubbish.

 

You will know him if shows ever open again, he'll have a can of Stella in his hand. Never, ever sit down for an evenings drinking with him, both will end up drunk.

First aid knowledge, if you can get a first aider cert from other things you do it is another asset to the team. Someone should have first aid at work anyway but extra bods are helpful.

This one I've got nailed down already.  Trying my hardest not to use it though.

Turn up on time, raking, throwline, no phone use, all good tips. The books mentioned are all good but also all old. For tree climbing the arb assoc have a new tech guide. Drier than jepsom but 20years newer.

Very very simple one that is overlooked a lot, Bring food and water so you don't have to stop all the time
