Tractor starting problem

Hi all

 

I cant get my international started. It was working fine and now the engine will only turn over very slowly. I thought it was the battery at first but it is fine. How do I tell if it is the starter motor. Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Check all your connections, i had a dodgy earth but it looked ok.Maybe its the solinoide?

We are haveing the same problem with the mighty Nuffield 10/60. I have taken off the starter moter, and taken to my local auto electrcal shop. Tested it for £3, and it is fine. Now faced with trying to find the electrical Fault. Thankfully the nuffield's electrics are simple, like me.

get it started first by towing it off let it tick over for half an hour or so then turn it off and try again if it starts great if it still does the same slow starter motor thing try jump leads off something with a big battery if the starter speeds up then its your battery,if it's still the same get your starter tested,but i'd lean towards the battery in this weather were having they can behave very oddly at times cheers DB.

The cable from the battery to the solenoid gets extremley hot to the point that its melts the solder. I will try and check the connections tomorrow but I am sure the battery is good and I have charged it and it sparks. I am not good with vehicle electrics but will give it a go.

Sounds like it could be a loose connection then if its heating up. Could also mean the starter is on its way out though.

 

What I usually do once checked that all connections are tight AND clean is to swap for a known good battery.

hi,sounds to me as the starter is on the way out/lazey get it checked out at a auto electric place, cost me just over 100 pound for a recon starter for my leyland tractor.

Hot wires mean bad conections under the huge load that cranking an engine causes. You need to check things like connectins and general condition of the wire itself.

Sounds like a loose connection causing a short if the solenoid is getting hot. Take off and wire brush all your connections and tighten, especially the earth.

If its still sluggish and the battery is OK, looks like the starter.

Before you start cleaning contacts, disconect the earth lead from the battery
