Much less activity from the big trawlers

Sorry Toxteth but the beamers and trawlers have not stopped, they are loving the low fuel prices which are offsetting the low fish prices. The volumes going through Brixham market haven't changed that much at all.

local news reports are saying the exact opposite ....local landings are very small as no restaurant trade and exports to china have all but stopped , local fishmongers are shut as well ....

If you don't believe me go on the Marinetraffic website and look at the AIS tracks of the trawlers off the south west coast and mid channel. It is flat calm and every beamer and trawler that floats is out. Our local fishmonger has taken on extra staff to cope with demand and home deliveries. Not all is rosy I am a shellfisherman and oyster farmer, the oyster market has collapsed and at the moment I am fishing for spider crabs which are all exported to the continent mainly Spain. The price is not good but there is a bit of demand and it is increasing daily which will hopefully keep my head above water (not the best analogy for a fisherman!) this year.

The ecological impact is yet to come. Yes there are the benefits to the climate from reduction in air travel and fuel usage generally, yes during the first 7 weeks a lot of wildlife had benefited from decreased human disturbance. However now everyone is allowed out people will be roaming all over. Those self indulgent types who’ve flown everywhere for their holidays will now be exploring the British countryside. It will be overrun with littering twats who see it as their playground, all 60million of them, wildfires aplenty are on the horizon and that’ll be just for starters  ????‍♂️

I think alot of this enviro benefits stuff has being overstated and will only be short term, like better air quality. Covid would need to kill alot more to have any positive enviro effect ?

Loads more flytipping reported and C02 still increasing

Global carbon dioxide levels have hit a record high despite reports of localised improvements in air quality...

I believe you and open to discussion . I was going on the same information as devontwig . I spoke with Brixham fish merchant a few weeks ago who says the same as twig . Such a shame however we all have to eat and a job to do .
