You are right, I know I am lucky to live here it's a beautiful area. From the top of my road you can see clear across Start Bay to Start Point. Particularly beautiful today, got to sea and got back without breaking anything, perfect weather and caught a nice lot of crab, first wage I've learnt since the beginning of March.

I am from over the river myself, brought up in Galmpton, nearly Torbay.

Is Highwell Land Rovers still going in Galmpton? a very Devon set up, but Dave was very kind to a skint teenager with a series 3 ?

You might find whiting in Tesco but your best bet is a fishmonger. You would probably have to ask them to get it in for you, there is so much fish caught in this country which isn't widely eaten so there isn't great demand. 100 per cent of the spider crabs I catch are exported as there is no demand here which is a shame as the meat is delicious.

Had spider claws and cuttlefish for dinner, caught today. I know I'm spoilt?.

I guess its not practical to freeze them by the boxfull and sell in the UK?

We get King Crab off-shore every now and again. Had to slum it with Fillet Steak Saturday night though. :D

Here in Lincolnshire we seem to be spaghetti junction for a lot of the main air routes from the continent to America and the skies are full of contrails normally.  But now together with the silence and the birdsong coming on strong, it is amazing how clean the air is and how far we can see now. We were very surprised how quickly all that happened.

Yes there is the benefit of not having to pick up Macdonalds crap on the side of the road, but it seems to have been replaced by rubber gloves that people chuck out.  I do not like picking them up as you do not know where they have been!

I remember when that place started was a few years ago now. I was brought up just down the road in the boatyard at Galmpton Creek. Not sure if it is still going, haven't been down that way for years.

The problem is we are not a fish eating culture in the same way as they are on the continent especially Spain. Go into a Spanish fish shop and you will see everything that swims and crawls in the sea, in Britain it's pretty much cod, salmon, tuna and prawns. Give a French housewife a spider crab and she will say ooh la la merci, a Spanish one ole! gracias, a British housewife wouldn't have a clue what to do with it and if it was alive would probably scream and run away!

I dive a lot locally ( Devon ) and catch and eat all sorts , but it is a lot of work preparing seafood  ( I don't mind ) but most people just want a lump of prepared meat ...cod , salmon and tuna .......many think picking a crab is too much effort and when you look at the price of a crab and calculate what % of it is edible then it is bloody expensive !!   My personal favourites are scallops and razor clams which are very rarely eaten or available locally , and most people  think that seafood is michelin star stuff , fussy and complicated recipes .  I believe we export about 75% of what we catch and import about 75% of what we eat !!    mad !!

Ive never had Razor Clams. They look horrid and its always put me off Im sorry to say. :D Love most Sea Food though. Took the Wife to Tokyo for a long weekend and we basically lived in the Sushi restaurants. Visiting the Old Fish Market before it was closed down and replaced was fun. We had to get up at 01:00 to get in line to get a ticket to enter. Then down to the small Sushi Bars within the Fish Market area after. Was great.
