This makes you look suspicious as hell.  The police are not the enemy. If you are being a law abiding citizen why would you not just be helpful and not waste their time by pretending your some drug dealer who knows his rights..

Surely the same must apply if the police pull in a couple of travellers with "tree surgeon" gear in the vehicle? Or is it just for the self righteous who never do wrong? How many times have we heard on here that the cops do sod all to stop and search wrong uns. One rule for everybody. If you've done nothing wrong why complain? Absolute bollocks.

If you’re driving a mechanically propelled vehicle vehicle on a road, then you can be stopped under s163 RTA 1988. They can then carry out whatever enq’s they have stopped you for. If you choose not to talk then that’s your call, but if you’re required to give your name / address and don’t, then you commit an offence.  Section 60 isn’t just about a power for stopping vehicles. Surely it’s good that they’re out and about stopping people when crime has occurred?

I’d be more than happy to be stopped and quizzed any time by the police. I wish it happened more often tbh. If there was a constant chance of being randomly pulled and machinery/trailer serial numbers and vehicle vins being checked then it would surely help deter some of the constant theft that takes place?

Been alot of police about in Sudbury the last couple of weeks and I saw a beat Bobby walking about which you just do not see.

Who doesn’t sit up a bit straighter, and glances down to make sure their belt is on when there’s a cop car on their tail.
And when stopped my heart sinks as in my door mirror I see him walking towards me looking very mean.
Being pulled over is an occupational hazard of being a tree surgeon driving a double cab transit tipper within 10miles of the local pikey reservation.
Luckily it’s a few words of advice or a routine enquiry rather than consistently being 2 tonne overweight, that has aroused their suspicions.

No point in messing them about the whole thing was sorted in 5-10 minutes, name, where you come from, where you going. I'd done nothing wrong, why would I mess them about. Copper said sorry for inconvenience and I was on my way.

You're right, don't know what changed recently but there seems to be more police about the place over the last few weeks.

Only the second time since 1996 that I've been pulled over in a vehicle, the first time was my fault for following my sat nav through a no right turn in London.
