hi

going to plant a few hazel this winter

 

only modest numbers about 30 

 

whats the best protection from rabbits

 

can use used full sized tree tubes for free

or the little tubes for hedging with a cane also used for free 

 

would they tend to make the young plants to grow as single stems 

 

aim to get stakes etc for home use

 

any tips

depends on the size of the plants if small just use the small ones try and get 2or 3 cob nuts if you can much more reliable to fruit than the normal hazel 

putting tree guards round will not make them single stem

All of my hazel is grown in rabbit spirals and they've all developed multiple stems. Once coppiced they'll sprout multiple stems anyway. The small tubes will be fine.

You could try both

 

I germinated and planted some chesnuts bought from lidl at xmas they seem to be doing ok so far in N Wales

I find a polite invitation sent to them at several hundred feet per second generally gets a decent acknowledgement

No idea, but if you plant chestnuts...
Or go to a coppice and dig your own.
Ramora from larch is crossing over to SC. Bit scary.
