Earth mounds in paddock mystery... (help me look smart!)

Look like anthills to me, we've had them on ungrazed land between saplings, they normally crush easily. Put your hands in and find out.

Chalk grassland is one of our rarest habitats, and a reason why Coombe Hill is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The large bumps on the steep west-facing slope are the nests of the yellow meadow ant; a tiny insect that builds large anthills that provides a diverse range of homes for many of these species of wild flowers and animals.

Deffo Ants. Theres quite a few fields here in Warwickshire that have them. The badgers love to dig them up and my feet seem helpless to avoid tripping over them on an all too often basis.

Yellow meadow ants, a sign of ancient undisturbed lime meadow, you often find plants such as orchids and cowslips growing amongst them, these mounds can be very old.

Yep definitely Yellow Meadow Ants. Small pale brown things. Pretty benign generally. They often live with the Chalkhill Blue butterfly larvae which they farm for honeydew and protect from predators.
