i use a pantin, on longer acsess assents i put a small krab on it to stop it poping off.

i can flick it off without having to bend all the way down just with the rope.

do you have to actually flip out the lever with other brands?? would of thought this may be a bit slow when climbing srt?

just wondering as ive only ever used the pantin.

thanks carl

Yours will be the Mk1 pantin(green) carlos, which was much better than the mk2. Yes you do have to flick out the lever but you can do it with your other foot with a bit of practice.

I ditched the Pantin years ago and got a CT which is much better.
Now got a Notch which is better again and tends right from the floor, although I find the straps a bit fussy.

I agree the notch straps can be a fiddle otherwise works well

Just picked up isc stryder and its crap! The strap sticks out abit and stops rope from feeding through. Go for the CT, its cheaper, smaller and smoother!

I've a CT bought new.

Just how sharp should the teeth be?

The front ones are fairly smooth whilst the rear deep inside are really very sharp.

Now I have a problem in getting the CT to open.

I've been trapped several times, one painfully with cramp, totally unable to free the rope.

I've had to remove it instead.

I had also plucked my rope in a few places.

I'll not attack it with a file or paper for fear of making burrs.

So tonight I'm looking to find the smoothest and easiest ascender to use and open.

Yep, bought Harken ninja. Can't beat the feeling of going up like a ninja.

Seriously, works well and self tends on very little rope. Easy to get out when you need to but doesn't fall out when you don't want.

I guessed Notch was maybe a ripoff Harken, they seem to produce lots of copy products. I also guessed it's the same Harken that make sailing hardware in which case proper brand, but never checked up on that.

I’ve been thinking about getting a ninja, do you use a foot loop with it, or knee ascender. And your right the notch is a spitting image

Another vote for the Notch, I've used it for about a week now, the straps aren't bad, just take a little getting used to, but when its on it doesn't seem to shift around on your boot, it runs well. Also had it on over my spikes no probs. Had a couple of CT's before but found that the straps seemed to loosen and shift around a little and I was regularly having to tighten them up.

I put the ninja on my right boot, HAAS loop around the left boot and elastic clipped to HC (HAAS appears to be a left hand CT). Not messed around with SRT yet, just used this way for longer ascents on doubled rope to save my arms.

The HAAS may be a bit expensive but it has always just worked every time, I'm 6 foot 7 and no adjustments required beyond opening the foot loop to max. Also never used ascender with spikes, just always spiked up the stem.

No issues with my CT just un-weight the rope and it clips off easy enough

Could you do me a favour and run your fingers over the teeth at the back and tell me if they feel very sharp.

Mine must just be faulty.

Could be worth looking at the new Edelrid foot cruiser

Sophisticated foot ascender that enables efficient and low-fatigue climbing on the rope. A pre-installed but removable...

(when the're available, March I think)

You can knock the rope lock down with your foot to pop the rope out, also doing a version to fit their climbing spikes.
