Today's milling

Hi Stuart,
Good question.
The biggest log we tested weighed at least 1.5 tons.
We milled the log as it sat on the table in about half.
After pushing the top half off, I tried winding one side up, but it snapped the cable.
Also one of the little plastic wheels on the pulleys crumbled under strain.
The other side was fine though.
I replaced the cable with several different types of paracord, none worked at all.
Got new stuff off Logosol.
However in the meantime we had to chock one end up and used a car jack to lift.

If you’re even thinking of going large, I would strongly recommend building a table and a log bed.
The shock of loading or turning is quite surprising.
Also having a log bed at the same height really helps loading if you’ve not got hydraulics to load.

(No, don’t have electricity in our warehouse.)

Ah ok thanks for the info.
I have use of an excavator with forestry grab so it can be put on gently. But I see what you’re saying with large logs to be moved. I will have to have a play with it then but I will defo build a log bed [emoji1303]. Cheers. Hope you find a new place.

Going through some old photos this morning.

Found one of me milling some big yellow cedar in Northern BC in 99.With an 076 I built from a couple of boxes of parts.

Hard to believe its 23 years ago!

It was very hard pushing the millvertically but somehow I managed.

Had a call come through asking for 10t of Elm to be milled a few days ago. Today he called and said he had a Gamie from a 20,000 acre sporting estate needing the tops lobbed off of 100 larch logs so they can be used to cross burns (streams) and set traps on them for catching Stoats and Weasels.

An hour later two 4x4’s pull up with a trailer full of the first batch of logs.

Funny how your day takes a turn for the unexpected. [emoji16]
