Try being a Freelance climber with 11 years experience, Degree in Arboriculture, not afraid to graft, climbing, rigging and 7.5t +e licence. Enjoy the difficult and shitty jobs people are too scared to do, not afraid to get my hands dirty on the ground but end up having to work for people with lesser knowledge and understanding of trees, modern day pruning, climbing and rigging techniques. Because I am asking £150 a day with climbing kit, rigging kit, saws, my own fuel and loler certificates and insurance and they tell me Iive got to be joking.

If you’re good you should be asking more than that! That’s what I charge and In my opinion I’m just an average climber, albeit with 10 years experience, maybe you are working for the wrong people. I know some firms who wouldn’t pay me that so I don’t climb for them. Others are happy to pay.

Meybs time to get her own chipper and tipper? Sounds like you have all the necessary kit and knowledge.

I do work for myself and sub out, it's a nice combo for me. I sub for less than 150 sometimes to pals, but only using my climbing kit and the Craics good. Wouldn't be able to do that much though.

Thus creating yet another top tier contractor competing for relatively sparse and already poorly valued work. Perhaps one bitter enough to not want to pay more than they earned as a freelancer to boot. Then there’s also the point of view that if someone’s struggling to make enough money to pay for the kit they’ve got atm, adding more and more expensive kit may not be a good idea. They might not be a good enough worker and/or not a good enough businessman.

The UK doesn’t need more tree firms. Every fucker is a tree surgeon. It needs fewer, better firms, who swoop in and smash out work with good, specialist kit and good, specialist men and repeat several times a day until everyone’s rich.

No aspersions cast on Floatlikeabutterfly. Just an observation of a wider trend.

That's exactly my view. I don't want to set up. I want to help build things. I worked for some great firms in the past, moved from New Forest area, with good contacts, and average wages but had good quality work, and great craic with the lads/lasses I worked with. Then moved to the North-west and struggling to find really good quality work. Let alone many people who will give me the time of day to give me a trial. I'm a humble lad, I just want to get on an work. Do a good job. Have fun and have a good time.

Is he doing the bob graham or wot ever u call it?

a mate managed it a few years ago just about killed him, think he had 6 mins to spare

Aye that's right, there were ten of us who started, not one completed leg 3 (of 5) in the tough conditions.

That's proably my biggest fear about doing the round, having no time to spare at the end when you feel like death and your mind has gone.

I can't understand it. Some firms won't pay more than 80 or 90 quid a day for a climber up here. 12 years ago I was on that as a groundie with no kit and just a saw ticket.

Hang on in there ( exactly what area are you in? ). Sure good firms are out there and you'll find them eventually.
