so...can I get an explanation of upward inflection?

Nevermind, googled it

Yes I think Steven Fry described it as a pleading tone..

which brings me to one of my own pet peaves....  Parents using a pleading tone to ask their children to behave..

I have to say something, hey, instead of pleading with that kid, tell him/she what he/she can and can''t do.. no ifs or buts but a fking demand..

let the little scumbag know that this is not a relationship built around equality but one built around teacher and child.. and your the boss..   not the damned child.

Agree.  You also see it with dog owners:  'No...don't do that Fido...be nice' said in a pathetic way.  Dogs, like kids, will take the pi55 if you let them.

I think that they just push the boundaries to see how far they can go. (Dogs and kids) and when it's wishy washy they don't really understand where the boundaries are. But it's hard with kids, my niece told me when she was six years old, that she could do what she wanted at school, because the teachers couldn't smack her. At 14 she was in care because she was pretty wayward, but now she's a parent she sees that discipline and structure is important. Her kids don't mess her about at all.

This sounds a bit petty, but it really bugs me that after climbing day,  I always end up picking bits of sawdust off my socks, boxers, etc before I can walk through my front door....or have to sweep up the trail through the house later..
Is it one of those facts of life I just need to accept? ( no, I don't have a waiting Mrs to do this for me ).
I've got to the point where I just drop my trousers and socks outside the front door -suppose I'm lucky in having broad-minded neighbours!
The boot-lace hooks on my chainsaw trousers (Husky extreme technical!?) are about as functional as a chocolate fireguard.
Is it 2018, or is it just me?

Exactly same here. I bought her a dyson. What more does she want?

At the moment the things that grate are:  starting a sentence with 'so', asking 'Can I get' instead of may I have and the incessant use of upward inflection.......sometimes even the whole sentence seems to be upwardly inflected.

Oh , yea . can I get instead of may I have does me as well . An Amerianism I believe .
