4x4 pickup/van mpg's plus reliability

2.2 ranger and new L200 with the more powerful engine both did/do around the 20 mpg towing a trackie and 25-30 without, although I do drive them hard

I'll have a look at the MPGs on 15 plate transit custom and 17 plate Hilux tomorrow - don't fancy going out to check now.  But, similar to Mick, I'm not that interested, only know it because 'puter tells me what it is.

 

Anyone gone down the re-mapping route?  Is it worth the effort??  Not something I'd normally consider, it is what it is when it comes out the factory and that's fine by me, but was on a job last week and the neighbour wants a tree down, nothing too complex, offered a re-map on the transit or Hilux in return.  He reckoned the Transit Custom is amongst the best vehicles for advantage from re-mapping.  I'm not interested in speed / acceleration (can't polish a ?) but would be interested in low end torque for towing and increased fuel economy.  Is it worth the effort?

2009 L200 king cab 175bhp. I get 31mpg according to the computer over a tank of fuel. Towing about 20mpg.

My older shape 2005 double cab l200 113bhp gets around 25mpg and about 12mpg towing about 2700kg. You have to push it harder to make progress.

1990 Ford F250 pickup 7.3 V8 diesel automatic.  14mpg short runs, 22 mpg on a cruise (actual consumption figures not on-board computer).

2005 D22 Navara with blanked off EGR and cleared out DPF . about 35-38 at a guess not towing and not treading on the loud peddle  and not doing much of anything as I am retired !

Mines a few years old.... 1998 Diahatsu Fourtrak towing and thrashing it about 25/gallon!!!

I tried the modern stuff (2015 onward) there is nothing, I feel, which is the reliable workhorse I require.  EGR & DPF issues,  rust, far too many electronics and all that comfort!

Hi  if you want a vehicle that's simple and cheap to repair I would by a pre td5 defender 110  spend  some money rebuilding it e.g galvanised chassis , bulkhead , transmission you should then have a vehicle that will run on for years with minimal outlay .

But doesnt the custom use the same engines from the transit (and pretty similar in the defenders) so surely they'd be good for remaps too?

That’s what the tune-up wizard said - it’s the same engine but ‘governed’ into different model spec’s to fit into tax brackets. He just unleashes that which has been previously suppressed. He Changes the engine performance (wether for economy or acceleration/ top end) but the vehicle retains original tax bracket.  £300 for a re-map.
