I want a Landy Tipper (Am I insane?)

I think you're probably right on all points. But i want a 4x4. If it take 1 to 1.5 ton of chip, that would be enough for 90% of my jobs currently. So not worried about that. I'd consider getting a Ford Ranger tipper, or similar. But would they be able to carry as much as a landy 130 or 110 hicap?

Defenders do a job and they do it well. 

 

Gearing is good for heavy towing. Air bags in the back will sort out the ride when fully laden. 

 

They are also surprisingly reliable, I believe most of the issue comes with what people expect. A Hilux that's done motorway miles from new and maybe towed a little trailer every now and again is likely to have received less parts than a Defender of the same age and mileage that has been worked hard. Almost every defender I know is worked hard with heavy towing and regularly off road. The life of most double cab pickups and vans is definitely easier, from my personal experience. 

 

Mine has towed full weight from brand new on almost every journey (nearly at 40000 miles now) and has been excellent. Is it comfy? not especially. But i have a car when comfort is a requirement.

So am I better off buying a pickup and converting it to a tipper (assuming its not been treated as badly) or just getting a tipper (which means less expense converting it to tipping) but being prepared to spend money to upgrade, improve, replace a worn out landy?

How much do you have to spend? 

 

I wouldn't want to run one without the 6 speed box, which means probably 18k+ for the base truck then 4-7k for the tipping gear. 

 

Saying that, the TD5 engine is lovely. I just really like the newer ones

You’ll need to buy a HCPU then if your not able to build / convert a body yourself then find a firm that can 

 

its as long as it is short, obviously building your own body lets you chose the design & spec 

 

you could also streacth the chassis from 110 to 130 or even 140 etc 

 

this is is the good thing about defenders, you can modify them ?

That's way outta my league. I'm talking about spending £5 to £7K max. Which basically means, buy a shit pick up for £3K and spend £2 or £3K on conversion, or buy an even shitter tipper for about £6 or £7K.

Stick with what you have if that's your budget.
