Worst nightmare.
Poor guy.
When will there be decent neck protection?
Is it possible?

It's a horrible thing, and thoughts go out to all involved.

Lack of protection wasn't the contributing factor though. Where would you stop?

I don't mean to sound callous. I have to regularly check myself with a top handle saw. Complacency can literally kill.

I agree. My worry is that the risk is always there and 'significant' from a risk assessment perspective. How often do you use a saw one handed when climbing - a lot. Can you always get the right work position to ensure you are at full stretch/reducing kick back risk - not always.

Obviously you need to take a pragmatic approach to this or we'd all have to stop tree work tomorrow but it's a real concern.
