She was asking if I can come back to remove the stumps now her builder has dug them out.

Got asked the same a year ago. When I gave them a quote, they said that was to dear, and I said if you had got them ground out there would of been no cost as would have just been left on site.

They think as we are tree surgeon we can just make them vanish.

In my early days in France, we once removed a large cedar to make way for a new sceptic tank installation.

Again, I was told the 'terrassier' would deal with the stump despite my sales pitch.

Weeks later, a call to say they got the stump out but cannot lift it onto a truck. Could I come back and grind it ?

I was running a Bandit sidewinder at the time.

In no rush to return, I breezed in at my convenience to be met with ball of clay and stump part blocking the drive which was  almost head height (O.K, I'm 167cm so at least 120cm)

Local professional tips won't take stumps here as they cause subsidence when they eventually decompose.

Instead there is a biomass depot with a large grinder for such things if you can transport them of course.

Had one today, been pushing stump grinding a bit lately as I have a new machine.

I get a call from 45 minutes away, long way for a price but hey ho.

As I’m rained off today I arranged to go over after lunch.

Nice bloke, row of Leylandii, 20 odd, decent size, nothing massive but a good mornings work with 1.5 hours travelling etc.

I quote €780 inclusive.

He says too much, he can hire a digger for 200 and pay a bloke 200 to dig them out.

Fine says I, shake hands and get in the truck.

Then I said to him.

’I have driven 45 minutes to be here, now if you’d have said over the phone, I can get it done by a mate for 400€ I’d have said get your mate to do it, I cannot bring the grinder over here and do it that cheap, and we’d all have saved time and money’

He looked a bit sheepish in fairness.

Don’t get me wrong, quotes are free, it’s a service industry and you have to take the rough with the smooth, but it can sting a bit sometimes.

No christmas cards for him this year then mick. Excuse the pun but it does grind you with clowns like that.

The older I get the less I give a hoot. If someone rings up and they are 30mins away I have got to be feeling extremely motivated to go and look at it!

Seem to get enough in my village and the small local town to keep me happy.

Quite a number of second home people round these parts. They get in contact for a quote but by god are they difficult to pin down. Seem to give you a very narrow window when you are obviously tied up elsewhere. One lady I have been batting emails back and forth for three weeks. Think that is going to kick it in the bin, shame as it is a local one but only so many hours on the day to deal with these cacti 🌵

I used to disappear up my own rear end trekking around the country to quote for works - then had a light bulb moment, started asking for spec/tree removal reports and offering up estimated time and costs based on that! If we were in the range I’d then take a trip to site and fully inform fees. Saying that I still get house builders telling me they have a budget of x amount (based on what exactly 🤣)  and then get asked if we can start the next day….🤣
