As Andy said rakeing up by headlght. is all part of the experience ! Winter usually means working harder to get the same amount of work done in half the time.

I did used to find myself subconciously trying to squeeze even more work insuring the summer months though !

some how i dont think its quite fair that i charge the same day rate and the client gets about 2 hrs less of my time now the clocks have gone back, does any body charge less or do we all take the money and run?

A day is a day is a day. We do sometimes start earlier in winter but charge for the job, not the light conditions.

As has been said, i dont change, work a bit harder, shorter breaks etc but in winter i try and get wrapped up by 4pm so home and packed away by 5 my outgoings dont change so my rates dont.

in the summer we worked 9-4.30, in the winter its 8.30-4.

same hours, just start and finish earlier.

if you charged 2 hours less a day, you would lose £600-800 a week! over the winter months that's about 10 grand!

Perhaps another point to throw in the mix....... do you not find that the type of work changes between summer and winter, possibly meaning that you wouldn't be spending as much time on site anyway???

I mean, summer to me always meant pruning type works. Reductions, thins, rows and rows of crown lifts and epicormics.......oh, and the endless hours upon hours of hedgetrimming.

But winter seemed to be more deadwooding, or take-downs, or apple tree snip snipping.

A tree that costs £400 quid to fell in the summer will still cost £400 come the winter.

I try to be back in the yard by 4pm no matter what time of the year its just that in the summer I can maybe squeeze the odd little job or two in.:001_smile:
