Transit getting hot.

My 2006 transit 20l Dura Torque DI starting getting hot earlier, just touching on going into the red.

 

Top hose is hot, bottom hose is cold, return hose luke warm. No loss of coolant.

 

Where do I start looking? Thermostat, water pump?

 

Is there anything else I should look at? Is there a sensor somewhere?

Have you pulled the dip stick to see if there's any white init had it on a transit many years ago and it was a cracked head.

Got the same on my Daily at the moment. Mechanic has fitted new thermostat as the old one had fallen apart. Still overheating. Water pump coming off today to check if that's the problem. Also heater been very poor for a couple of months - coincidence?

Yes Mike, pulled the dip stick, no emulsion. I've just taken the thermostat off and tested it in boiling water, it seems to be stuck closed.

 

I thought if the stat was stuck closed the heaters in the van only blow cold. Or have a got that wrong?

 

Edit: scrap that, I've just tested the stat again (with my eyes open), it opens and closes as it should.

Old fashioned bellows ones failed open, waxstats tend to fail closed. The heater circuit is open when the thermostat is closed so the heater works.

 

I cannot understand the bottom hose being cold if the thermostat is open.

Sounds like a blocked rad eG6, that or your gauge is telling you fibs.

Am I right in thinking if I start it now, with the stat housing open, if it spews the rest of the coolant out the pump is ok, or am I going to feck summit?

Might be the cylinder head sensor temp gauge measuer reader system thing.

I don't know, shouldn't hurt for a short test but don't let the pump run dry.

 

Why not run it with the thermostat out whilst stationary and see if bottom hose gets warm.

 

Don't run on the road without a thermostat as engines need to be warm to run efficiently.

 

New thermostat will be about £20
