Anyone use a "safety razor"?

I had my head sharpened with a cut throat razor last Monday.  Guinea pig for one of my mate's hair cutting students.  I'd highly reccomend it.  Even just the shave, you don't have to go total Kojack,

I have been using the Hydro 5 for a good while and get cartridges off ebay for around £1.50 each which is about as low as it goes and make them last around a month but they do get a bit scratchy after 2 weeks but I do get a decent shave.

Anyway .....damn Arbtalk, I read this thread again and now have a long handle Edwin Jagger DEL89 on order and will see what a quality English razor and traditional blade can do for me.

I sort of think shaving is a PITA but also like the pampering and preparation etc.....when I have time. It will be interesting to see what the differences are, the blades are much cheaper and will be able to bin them when they go off and know the thing isn't costing a fortune but there we go, next weeks experiment.

Here's my shaving stuff. The razors (left to right) are an Edwin Jagger DE89, Executive Braveheart and a Feather.

 

My favourite is the Braveheart, it just gives such a tight shave and the handle is made in Glasgow. The Feather is quite a famous razor and comes from Japan and cost me £170.... Tbh, I don't think it's particularly good.... The EJ was my first razor and is a good starter razor. 

 

The razors cope with stubble really well. I shave twice a week and they just slice through the stubble - something a cartridge razor would struggle with.

 

I use the Gillette blades as they are made in Russia (I like Russian foreign policy) and they come in paper boxes (no plastic to throw out). The chrome box is a vintage razor case from the 1920's to 1950's and came from EBay.

 

I put my used blades into the plastic tub and the magnet on the bottom holds them in  I eventually put them in a used soup can and hammer it shut and put it in the recycling

Got a tub of Taylors of Bond Street shaving soap and a brush. My preconceptions were that all the talk of expensive grooming products was a load of balls but after using it for one day, my face post shave was very noticeably less dry, red and "abraded" and at the end of the day, it is smoother and feels softer so am actually quite impressed.

I think much of the art is in re-lathering after each pass and that really seems to work. My first attempt with the new safety razor wasn't great but wasn't using the new soap and was still in cartridge mode rather than using less pressure! Time and experience will tell!

Used a cut throat a few time but takes me too long to do it and I HATE shaving around the adams apple.

 

Bought this a year or so ago. Pricey but I'm glad I put my hand in my pocket. Near as dammit as good as a wet shave and far less hassle.
