You really need a decent air rifle and scope as rats are tough, you need to break the spine or hit them in the head to do the job, a body shot isn't good enough. Air pistols are just not accurate enough in my view!

I use wad cutter target pellets, the flat head gives a good impact!

The old BSA Scorpion was a cracking air pistol for Rats in the right hands .

When is the best time to sit around waiting. It's a bit chilly at the moment.

Whenever it's quiet they're around my yard. Scuttle under the container where the borders can't reach them :sneaky2:

True, but any near 6 ft lbs air pistol is a good option for rats caught in a live trap, which is what Commando was on about.

Drowning them has never sat right with me.

Anyone use an air pistol? I want something that Mrs Cdo can use to dispatch them in live catch cage when i'm out of country? She's not keen on the swim test method!

I use an air rifle for dispatching squirrels in live traps. To be honest it's harder than it sounds, you have to put the barrel in and then wait for the animal to put its head under the barrel.

I found the easy way to kill them is shotgun from twenty yards. At that range the trap isn't damaged. Obviously not an ideal solution in a garden.

Remington 1100 5 shot auto with a sleet barrel is better.

Bit more collateral damage to the surroundings perhaps.

Or better still a skeet barrel :001_smile:

Fenn tracks work well but they must be hidden with a cover of tube to prevent other wildlife getting caught ....unfortunately they attract Hedgehogs so not the best option.. I have great success with the live cages and use Wossits and Bananas has bait with a piece of wood cabled tied inside on the bait table, this encourages the rats to climb over and put bate back of the cage ....

Legal information...these Rats were humanely killed inline with the animal welfare who say they should be put in a dark bag and clubbed to death!

I found I was catching all sorts with my squirrel traps. If you put them higher up you shouldn't catch hedgehogs. I also find if you lay them at an angle with the entrance at the high end you don't catch pigeons.
