They do. It's called NHS professionals. It's not as well paid as independent agencies and it's undersubscribed.

They are but they still have to fill the day to day staffing needs and if they can only get independent agency staff at twice the price they do. Even then they are often under staffed.

With regards to payment for use, why shouldn't there be a charge for A&E when it is caused by alcohol or drug abuse? If you can afford to get in that state in the first place then you can afford to pay for your treatment, no? If it's somebody claiming benefits(which must be excessive or they wouldn't afford the drink or drugs), either reduce their benefits or attach a lien to future earnings.

Those types of people would put drugs 1st no matter what! Although you could charge the working idiots but again it is the working being penalised. Also where would it end smoking is self harm as is alcohol drugs and even obesity to a point, charging people would initiate a private service and before you know it we would be paying NI and private insurance. The NHS has a lot of faults but it is still a good service and it is an envy of a lot of other nations.

And where would it end?

 

Injury playing a sport? Car accident where you are at fault? Skin cancer from too much sun?

 

Thin edge of a very large and unpleasant wedge, IMO.

 

As for people on benefits, what if they have children? Should the innocent suffer because of who their parents are?

 

Unfortunately there are no easy answers.
