Last time I was struggling to get low skilled staff to get hedges trimmed for a contract I used Indeed.co.uk

I put a free add for 2 weeks temporary employment and got loads of replies. Some better than others.. Some foreign but most not.

I employ foreigners for seasonal work, they are with me from May to October and live onsite in a static.

Good lads, work hard. Absolutely no idea about time and motion and even worse have no inkling what H&S is about. In fact have little inkling about self preservation never mind anyone around them.

perhaps the underlying problem is that the employers aren't paying enough in wages?

I currently work 200 miles away from my house. I only do this because my hourly rate is good. If the employers paid more they would get employees....

I don't think it is, agencies charge quite a bit, so if you can afford to pay an agency you can afford to pay a decent wage IMO.

As I touched on earlier Ian, with an Agency you have the option of 'returning' the staff if they aren't up to scratch. Alternatively, take them on the books, pass the agency fee onto them directly if they are worth it.

Pay peanuts and get monkeys!

I'm constantly surprised trying to get in to this industry with potential employers trying to offer day rates which work out well below minimum wage.

Yep. At least you don't even get to have the pleasure of working for them!

All my labour is foreign...

The last Brit I employed turned out to have a serious drug problem and stole from us.

The one before that misrepresented himself age, ability and level of French.

The French lads are arrogant pups but at least they speak the language and don't get the 'ump over having to eat a 4 course restaurant meal every day for lunch.

Our tame Afghan though is a fat lazy sod who believes the world owes him a living.

I've noticed alot of builder companies employ agency staff for many of the same reasons.... so you could try contacting a few of them for an agency contact.

cheers, steve
