I changed the carb when I did the head gasket. I've just had another go at the valves and run it up again. Runs better but not perfect plus the oil seems to have burnt off. Now, like a muppet, I stripped the thread of the valve cover so it won't seal. It's off the my local machine shop to get that sorted tomorrow. If I'm lucky they might even tune it for me. These things really should have been taught at school in 1986, I might have paid some attention !

Can you take me through the whole process. What saw did you cut the slab with, how did you plane it and sand it and what oils did you use and how did you apply the oils/ varnish and how many coats My wife has ordered some squarer legs and I will post a piccy if they look ok And did you fill the cracks or just leave them

Do you reckon a 50 year old BSA177 needs a chronograph? I always thought a chronograph was a posh watch!

Best Chinese copies of everyone else's hard work and innovation!

So I take it there is no longer a leak in the head, which is good. It doesn't sound too bad to be honest. Yes incorrect valve adjustment could cause those backfires and loss of power - loose valves don't seal properly allowing unburnt fuel in when it shouldn't. Also you mentioned a dirty carb, this could mess with the fuel mix and cause backfires.

Yes they all worked for Ken until he went racing full time and we all started fires with tyres ;-(. at least the racing ones were softer ant less wire?? Ken's brothers were still in the trade in the Shere area circa 1987 -

I've managed to get it running until hot, helps if you remember to refill the tank Dufus... It was spluttering oil out of the exhaust briefly until it seemed to burn off and now exhaust smell has much improved. Is the spluttering and back firing caused by the valves needing adjusting properly? VID_20250812_171453.mp4

Ted used a truckload of Ken Tyrrell's old racing tyres to light a bonfire at a site we were clearing in Byfleet, I ran and hid.I could see the smoke from New Haw.

Sounds about right, the Pineapples on their shirts had me smirking.

Mr Ben was one of my favourites as a kid. RIP.

That was one of the reason I posted the pics. As well as a fine looking table, the legs seemed to really finish it in a good way.

Was there something a while back that reefs regenerate quicker than the scientists thought they would or am I making that up? (something that they'd found one in Australia that had grown a lot more than expected or something like that)

I've only briefly run it up as it needs a carb tune but the exhaust smells of burnt oil although there is little in the way of visible smoke.

My girlfriend asked me how many women I've shagged. I said,"I really don’t want to answer that love. You know I've had a past and I don't want to upset you" "C'mon" she said,"I can handle it" So I had to sit there and count them all. “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, you, 10, 11, 12.”

when you say burning oil, is that oil that is leaking round the head gasket then smoking off (like the photos in your first post) or has that oil leak been fixed and oil is still getting into the combustion, as a separate problem?
-
I took it apart but have lost the images somehow. No obvious scoring on the cylinder though. Re-fitted a fresh head gasket and carb which needs a tune. I think I got the tappets done correctly. Still burns oil. Or moving the machine on with the Chinese engine fitted and buying a new grinder.
