I have an Stihl 023 chainsaw that I’d like to fit a carving bar too. I use it for fencing work and would like to try a carving bar for morticing posts. Could someone point me in the direction of a good bar and chain? currently running a 16” regular bar.

Hello 👋 I stumbled across your forum and was hoping for a bit of advice? We just moved to a rural rented property where we plan to stay for around 5 years. We need to fence an area of the garden at the front (approx 30 metres, easy access, one corner, soft ground) due to a road as we have dogs. Our landlord is happy for us to do whatever but may well want us to remove the fence at the end of the tenancy, I guess depending on how nice it looks, not sure on the criteria! We need it to be about 3ft high, not spoil the views and keep the dogs in, though they are not really escape artists but one is quite small, so no huge gaps. Need to be able strim the grass easily too. Would stock fencing or picket fencing be the best option? Or is there something else? Have to consider price a bit as its only 'semi permentant' so to speak and ease of removal if required. No concreting etc. We already have stock fencing around some of the property, so that would seem fitting. But would picket fencing be cheaper/easier/look nicer? What sort of price would I be looking at? Any ideas and suggestions welcome. Thanks for reading if you made it this far 😀

Something a bit different! I've been to a clients this morning to look at a Lime tree that lies on the border of the property. The client wants to fence around the tree but the post will be directly in the roots of the tree within centimetres of the stem. Has anyone come across a fencing system that will allow the fence to go around the tree without digging posts in?

Does anyone know how to go about adding extra horizontal lines to stock netting? I need to bisect the bottom 2 holes to keep some ducks in. I have in the past simply pulled some extras lines and hog ringed them in place but its a bit of a bodge and its at my gaff so it would bother me for the rest of my days! There must a way of knotting around the verticals with a smaller gauge wire to add lines?

I was wondering if anyone runs a pto post basher on the back of their alpine tractor? I have been asked by a number of customers if I can install/ replace stock fencing at their properties once the ground dries up a bit and am inclined to take on the work if I can match an implement to my existing tractor. most of the runs are fairly short (+- 200m) and a little fiddly so not well suited to a full size contractor set up. what are people’s experience with the smaller post bashers? Can they stomach strainers and even gate posts? Any recommendations or advice welcome.

Does anyone know a rough guide price as to what price range per meter it might cost to get stock proof fencing put up? ie 3-4 feet high sheep fence with a strand of barbed wire above it to keep farm stock from the adjacent field getting into woodland. For roughly 500 metres of fence on stony ground. Thanks

Hi, I have seen some older posts on the subject of Stock Fencing and wondered if anyone could help. We cover grounds maintenance, and have done dozens of small 50/100lm jobs with stock fencing. I have been asked to give a guide price on 4000lm of stock and single barbed. Decent tractor access, not withstanding any gates or stiles, is there a guide to lm pricing?. Thanks in advance Colin

Hiya, I'm planning a stock fencing job using sweet chestnut for the strainers and intermediates etc. A couple of questions if anyone's got experience of this please: I'm planning on using 3-4" round intermediates for a more 'conventional' look. Do you know whether cleaved profiles would give a significantly longer life because there's less sapwood? I'd expect a better lifespan but need to judge whether it's significantly better - hoping 3-4" thick enough to balance this out. Bark on seems to blend into the landscape much better, do you know how much this would reduce the lifespan of the fence? Can anyone recommend a good supplier? Shipping is down to Cornwall so will need bulk to keep transport down. Many thanks!!

What is the best wood for fence posts for fencing as i find softwood post are treable and do not last any time.due to the cost of fence post at the moment and the bad treaments. i am condering planting some sc coppice but i am not shore about what condition it likes and i can not find any thing on yeilds classes, cost of coppicing exctra and ther is next to nothering in the way of forestry here so it can be hard to get adivice. but if ther are any wood that are better can you sugest them as well. and what gentic stock is better i feel it would be viable to do this as it would easer and they would last longer. this would be much apreached NI Tree
